چکیده

مباحث بسیار زیادی، پیرامون مفهوم بیابان‌زایی به عنوان یک فرایند تخریب کننده‌ای که مناطق خشک، نیمه خشک و نیمه مرطوب جهان را تحت تأثیر قرار می‌دهد‌، انجام شده است. منازعه بنیادی و مداوم هم بر سر وجود واقعی بیابان‌زایی و همچنین چگونگی تعریف کردن، اندازه گیری و ارزیابی آن وجود دارد. در اینجا بیشتر از بازنگری ساده‌ی سیر تکاملی این مباحث، زمینه‌هایی مورد بررسی قرار می‌گیرند که این مباحث در آن به وقوع پیوسته‌اند و اینکه چگونه این زمینه‌ها بر تکامل شناخت نسبت به فرایندهای در هم تنیده‌ای که به بیابان‌زایی منجر می‌گردد، شرکت داشته‌اند‌. در حقیقت، این زمینه‌ها در اثر مرور زمان تغییر یافته‌اند. این مباحث در ترکیب با این واقعیت که برخی از آنها هم اغلب نادیده گرفته شده‌اند به تقویت این منازعه کمک کرده‌اند. چهار زمینه‌ای که بیشتر این مباحث را شکل داده و تأثیری که هر کدام بر جای گذاشته‌اند، شامل:-1 تغییرات شناخت نسبت به تغییر پذیری آب و هوا،-2 تغییرات شناخت نسبت به واکنش‌های گیاهی دربرابر آشفتگی‌ها،-3 تغییرات شناخت نسبت به فرایندهای اجتماعی، چون واکنش های خانواده‌ها به نابسامانی‌های اقتصادی -4 تغییرات شناخت نسبت به بیابان‌زایی به عنوان یک فرایند سیاسی یا انسان ساخته، بررسی شده‌اند.
