چکیده
در 13 مارس سال 1781 یک موسیقیدان و منجم آماتور به نام ویلیام هرشل، شب هنگام موفق به کشف سیاره اى به نام اورانوس گردید. ابتدا او به درستى در نیافت که موفق به کشف چه چیزى شده است و آن را با یک ستاره دنباله دار اشتباه گرفت. هرشل زمانى که در حال تفحص در آسمان با تلسکوپ بازتابنده 15 سانتیمترى اش بود، به طور اتفاقى موفق به کشف یک ستاره کم نور و غیرعادى شد. وقتى او بزرگنمایى تلسکوپش را بالا برد، این شى غیرعادى بزرگتر نمایان گردید. زمانى هرشل معتقد به دیدن این جسم در آسمان گردید که هنوز ستارگانى که در همسایگى این جسم قرار داشتند، به صورت نقاط تعریف نشده اى از نور در آسمان بودند.
وى توانست در طول شب هاى دیگر زمانى که این سیاره به آرامى از میان ستارگان عبور مى کرد، سرنخ ها و اطلاعات بیشترى را به دست آورد.
درخشندگى این جسم که جزء منظومه شمسى به شمار مى رفت، کمتر از یک ستاره بود و بیشتر خصوصیات آن دال بر این بود که یک ستاره دنباله دار است. هرشل کشف خود را به مجمع سلطنتى انگلستان با عنوان «توصیف یک ستاره دنباله دار» ارائه کرد.

On March 13, 1781, an amateur musician and astronomer, William Herschel, discovered the planet of Uranus at night. First, he didn’t understand what he had discovered and confused it with a comet. Herschel accidentally succeeded in discovering a dim and unusual star when he was exploring the sky with his 15 cm reflecting telescope. When he raised the magnification degree of his telescope, this unusual object appeared larger. When Herschel could believe observing this object in the sky, the stars that were in the vicinity of this object were still undefined points of light in the sky.
He was able to gain more clues and information during other nights when this planet slowly passed through the stars.
The luminosity of this body, which was part of the solar system, was less than a star, and most of its features indicated that it was a comet. Herschel presented his discovery to the Royal Institution of Great Britain under the title "Describing a Comet".
