چکیده
GIS یا سیستم های اطلاعات جغرافیایی به طور گسترده در بخشهای آموزشی، دولتی و بازرگانی ایجاد شده اند. اصطلاح GIS غالبا در توصیف شماری از سیستم ها و عمل ها به کار گرفته می شوند.
این اصطلاح برای افراد مبتدی و تازه کار می تواند با پیچیدگی زیادی همراه باشد، زیرا به نظر می رسد که تعاریف مختلفی را در بر دارد و قلمروهای مطالعاتی و موضوعی متنوعی را تحت پوشش قرار می دهد.
این مقاله با ذکر مقدمه ی از روند رو به رشد سیستم های اطلاعات جغرافیایی به چگونگی ماهیت GIS و تاریخ اجمالی تحولات آن می پردازد.

GIS or geographic information systems have been widely developed in educational, government and commercial sections. The term GIS is often used to describe a number of systems and operations.
This term can be complicated for beginners and newcomers because it seems to encompass
different definitions and cover different study areas and subjects.
This paper, with an introduction to the growing trend of geographic information systems, addresses the nature of the GIS and the history of its developments.
